The Watts family is believed to have been involved in shipping in England as early as 1715. They were known to own small sailing vessels carrying coal to various ports and in 1869 purchased their first steam ship. In 1884 they started the Britain Steam Ship Company. They also owned a company called The Watts Shipping Co. Ltd.
The company was wound up in 1968.
