Registered by James Huddart in 1893 as the Canadian-Australian Steam Ship Company, the line obviously operated between Canadian and Australian ports.
In 1900 the Union Steam Ship Company of New Zealand acquired controlling interest in the company and renamed the service Canadian-Australian Royal Mail Steam Ship Company.
