Translated this name reads North German Lloyd Bremen.
This German line was established around the 1860’s. In 1885 it won a contract to carry mails to Australia, which of course meant it was now in the Germany to Australia passenger service as well.
In 1897 due to the great competition offered by its rivals Nordeutscher Lloyd introduced two new vessels which exceeded 10,000 tons and were the first ships of this size to be seen in Australia.
The first World War witnessed the confiscation of many of the company’s ships and it was not until 1925 that it was able to restart it services again.
In 1939 its services were suspended once again due to World War 11.
When the war ended it once again picked up the pieces and restarted it services. The line survives today in association with HAPAG LLOYD.
