The Blue Star Line began operations in 1911. During the early part of its career, the company’s fleet consisted entirely of refrigerated cargo ships.

In 1926 it turned its attention to catering for passengers.

All the ships of the line had names ending in STAR such as the ALMEDA STAR or the ANDALUCIA STAR.

By the outbreak of World War 1, the Blue Star Fleet had grown to a total of 38 ships. During the ensuing years of hostilities 29 of these vessels were destroyed.
