The Ocean Steam Ship company (not to be confused with the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company) was founded by Alfred Holt in 1865. Initially it traded between England and China.

The line was popularly known as the Blue Funnel Line. In 1889, Alfred Holt directed the company’s interests to include Australia. In 1964, after many years of service on the Australian run, the last of the Alfred Holt’s Blue Funnel Line ships disappeared.
